Whoops! Offended Native Women By Accident
The background on this video is that two of us were hanging out on the beach in Nungwi (North Coast) when a group of older native women walked by. Immediately, I was impressed by them. I could tell they had been through some things in life and said I wish I could talk to them because they looked like they had a lot of wisdom to pass. I also said a few looked like they didn't take any mess and that they were probably onery old women that would say whatever, whenever, and wherever. Boy was this true! LOL
Minutes later, they formed a line and started walking into the ocean. Having never seen this before, I was instantly curious and when they walked into the ocean almost to their necks, I was in awe. I pulled out my camera to take a photo, but was waiting for a passing couple to get out of the way. Well, the woman stopped and in full view of the women, took out her camera and started taking pictures of them. Realizing I had to take pictures at the same time in order to get the shot and to hopefully go unnoticed since she was so blatant with it, I lifted my camera and took two quick photos.
Of course we were noticed and the women went off! LOL It was in Swahili, so I didn't understand, but I immediately knew we were being told off. I was on the beach with a native and it was explained to me that the women were saying how dare we take pictures of them, they're not crazy, and they have husbands. I quickly put my camera down, but the brazen woman standing in front of them (I was seated on the beach a short distance behind her) was still taking pictures. The women talked the whole time she was there. Finally, she got a clue and awkwardly put her camera down before walking away with her companion.
It took a minute or two for us to stop laughing at the other woman and I being cursed out AND for me to feel brave enough to pull out my camera again. LOL I angled it and started recording a video while pretending I wasn't recording anything. You can hear part of our conversation as the native explains to me what's going, what the women are doing.
I would love to have do that with them one day. It seems like it would be such an awesome experience!
